WOLF CREEK GOLF RESORT SET TO HOST CN FUTURE LINKS WESTERN CHAMPIONSHIP
Top six Junior Boys finishers and Junior Girls champion to receive exemptions into respective Canadian Junior Championships-
Ponoka, Alta. (Golf Canada) – Many of Canada’s top junior golfers will compete in the CN Future Links Western Championship, July 11-14 at Wolf Creek Golf Resort in Ponoka, Alta.
The tournament marks the fifth of six regional CN Future Links Championships held in each region of Canada, showcasing two divisions: Junior Boys and Junior Girls 18 years and under. The CN Future Links Western Championship will see 85 golfers competing in a three-day 54-hole stroke play competition.
“Every year the CN Future Links Western Championship features the top juniors and best courses that Western Canada has to offer,” said Golf Canada Tournament Director Matt MacKay. “I am excited for the hospitality and challenge that Wolf Creek Golf Resort is going to provide to these talented junior players. It’s going to be another great week of competitive golf.”
The top six competitors in the Junior Boys division of each CN Future Links Championship will earn exemptions into the 2011 Canadian Junior Boys Championship, August 1-5, at Morgan Creek Golf Course, in South Surrey, B.C. A tie for the 6th position in the Junior Boys division will be decided by a hole-by-hole playoff immediately following conclusion of play.
The Junior Girls winner from each CN Future Links Championship will earn exemptions into both the 2011 Royale Cup Canadian Junior Girls Championship, August 1-5, at QGolf Club in Richmond, B.C. and a 2012 CN Canadian Women’s Tour event.
The Junior Girls division is highlighted by Team Canada Development Squad member, Jisoo Keel of Coquitlam, B.C. Keel, who captured the CN Future Links Pacific Championship at Arbutus Ridge Golf Club in Cobble Hill B.C., also had an impressive season on the CN Canadian Women’s Tour earning Low Amateur of the Year honours. Her second place finish on the Tour’s Order of Merit afforded the 15-year old an exemption into the 2011 CN Canadian Women’s Open taking place August 22-28 at Hillsdale Golf and Country Club in Mirabel, Que.
Keel will compete against 2011 Alberta Junior Girls Champion and Team Alberta member, Jennifer Ha of Calgary. The 17-year old won the Junior title by a remarkable 18 strokes, posting a four-round tally of 6-under par (282) at Canmore Golf and Country Club in Canmore, Alta. Ha’s Team Alberta teammate, Sabrine Garrison of Calgary, is also in the field, alongside Emery Bardock of Armstrong, B.C., a runner-up at last year’s CN Future Links Western Championship.
In the Junior Boys division, Team Alberta members Austin Cruickshank, Derek Field, Scott Secord and Liam Wolfe, all of Calgary, will compete for a CN Future Links title, alongside teammates, Riley Fleming of Airdrie, Alta., Tyler Saunders of Sturgeon County, Alta., and Jack Wood of Banff, Alta.
An additional notable competing in the Junior Boys division is 2011 Frank Lindsay Alberta Junior Boys runner-up, Emmett Oh of Calgary.
The remaining CN Future Links tournament schedule also includes the final event of 2011, the CN Future Links Atlantic Championship (July 18-21 at Sussex Golf & Curling Club in Sussex, N.B.).
