LAPOINTE ON A ROLL AS CANADA LEADS WORLD AMATEUR GOLF TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP

PUERTO RICO - (October 20, 2004) Mary Ann Lapointe of Georgetown, Ont., led Canada to a two stroke lead during the opening round at the Women's World Amateur Golf Team Championship held Wednesday in Puerto Rico.

Lapointe, 44, blistered the course knocking an opening round five-under 67 to help Canada to a two stroke lead heading into the second round of play. With her five under performance she also leads in individual play by two strokes on Maria Martinez of Venezuela.

Laura Matthews, of Essex, Ont., also carded a top daily score finishing with a two-under par 70, for a share of fifth place. With those combined scores, Canada leads the four-round world championship with a one-day total of 137 with the United States in second at 139. Korea sits third at 142.

Lindsay Knowlton of Toronto, the third member of Team Canada, shot a respectable 73, just one over par, but her score did not count towards Canada's first round total.

Forty nine countries are competing in the 2004 women's competition with every team carrying up to three members. In each round, the total of the two lowest scores by players from each team constitutes the team score for the round. The four-day (72-hole) total is the team's score for the championship.

2002 defending champion, Australia finished the opening round well back
at 158 (+8) strokes tied for 22nd position.

The Women's World Amateur Team Championship is conducted by the International Golf Federation and is played every two years with this the twenty-first edition. Canada's best placing to date is two second place finishes in 1966 and 1978. From 1964 to 1972 Canada managed five consecutive fifth place finishes. Previously in the 2002 Canada finished in 12th place.

Second round action continues tomorrow with Canada competing on the second of two courses being played this week. The third and fourth rounds are scheduled for Friday and Saturday.
