Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour Qualifies More Players For Matches In Scotland And Mexico
Stony Plain, AB – The Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) held a double qualifier at the Stony Plain Golf Club this past weekend for berths on teams to two major international tournaments. Some of Alberta's finest junior golfers faced exceptionally trying weather during the first day while perfect playing conditions prevailed throughout the second round.
The two-day MJT Hygaard Fine Foods Classic at Stony Plain had qualifying spots for the Maple Leaf Teams to both the 4th annual International Junior Golf Team Matches in Cuernavaca, Mexico, August 8-12, and the Kingdom of Fife Team Matches in Scotland, August 21-26.
Will Porter, 17, of Coaldale, continued his excellent run of form with consecutive under-par rounds of 71 (142 total), winning the Boys 17 and up division, low overall score, and a berth on the team to Scotland.
“I tried not to think about any of the other players that were in contention and make as few bogeys as possible, but you always want to know if you’re leading or not,” said Porter. “It means a lot (to win) – this is my first win this year and I’m looking forward to Scotland.”
Porter will form part of the eight member Maple Leaf Team to Scotland, together with 16-year-old hockey and golf standout Trent Colberg of Drumheller, who posted scores of 71-72 (143) to win the Boys 14-16 division and second low overall score.
“I made some solid shots, played one shot at a time,” said Colberg, who has just been drafted by the Spokane Chiefs in the Western Hockey League. “When I holed out on 18 I knew I had won; it gives me a boost in confidence.”
Andrew Funk, 16, of Edmonton, placed second in this division with scores of 70-74 (144) which secured him a spot on the Maple Leaf Team to Mexico.
Back in the Boys 17 & up division, runner-up Kyle Morrison, 18, of Red Deer, fired a great closing round of 69 to finish at 145 total score, qualifying for the second spot on the team to Mexico. Third place in the division was claimed by Daniel Pow, 18, of Calgary.
The rest of the two teams are qualifying at other MJT tournaments across the country.
The MJT Hygaard Fine Foods Classic Boys 13 and under division champion was Sean Jedrusiak, 13, of Calgary, who posted scores of 78-76 (154) to beat joint second place finishers Scott Lowe, 12, of Calgary, and Evan Cowan, 12, of Coaldale, by five strokes.
“My game plan was to stay calm and focus on putting,” said Jedrusiak. “We were all close after round one – I only knew on 18 that I had made it and it’s exciting, it’s my first win.”
In the Girls division, Jen McLean, 17, of nearby Devon, fired a fine 75 on day one against the wind and cold which helped her to secure the win over Mackenzie Renner, 17, of Lethbridge despite a tough second round.
“I had my best tournament round ever of 75,” said McLean. “I tried to hit every green and two-putt – this win means the world to me.” McLean posted 75-83 while Renner shot 83-80.
Division winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were McLean, Matthew Vacy-Lyle, 13, of Drumheller, Lee Geers, 16, of Coaldale and Ashton Beekman, 17, of Coaldale.
The Sundog Eyewear Closest-to-the-Pin Competition division winners were Renner, Vacy-Lyle, Jace Barros, 15, of Edmonton and Brandon Markiw, 17, of Edmonton.
The non-profit Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour, now in its 7th season, is presented by Boston Pizza and is Canada’s only major junior tour run exclusively by Canadian PGA Professionals and endorsed by PGA Tour veterans Dave Barr and Ray Stewart. The next local tournament is the MJT 1st Choice Savings Series at Picture Butte Golf Club in Picture Butte, June 18-19.
