Buick BC Junior Championship

CHRISTINA LAKE – Rafael Lee of Burnaby rode a sparkling six-under-par 66 Friday to the 2004 Buick British Columbia Junior men’s title at the picturesque Christina Lake Golf Club course.

The 16-year-old Burnaby Central Secondary grade 11 student who started the final day five strokes off the pace, finished with an 11-under 277 total. It was three strokes better than third-round leader Ryan Lidkea of Delta, Dong-Kyu Kim of Langley and 15-year-old Darren Wallace, also of Langley.

Lidkea, the 2003 winner who early in the final day had reached 13 under, unravelled on the back nine and posted a 74 for his 280. Kim, who moved west from Toronto this year, rallied for a 69 while Wallace closed with a 67 that included his third hole-in-one, which came at the 175-yard fifth. Sean Patrick of Abbotsford had a second tournament ace, at the 16th, for a 74 and 295.

The first four players will represent B.C. at the Canadian Junior team championships next month at Vancouver Marine Drive, Lee’s home course.

The only flaw in Lee’s game was a bogey at the final hole. A par would have equalled the competitive course record. The six-foot 180-pounder got off to a fast start, holing a lob-wedge shot for an eagle-two at the second and finally caught Lidkea with a birdie-four at the 11th as Lidkea took another bogey.
