8th Annual MJT Cattermole Timber Classic Plays Out In Chilliwack

CHILLIWACK, BC – Reasonable golfing conditions prevailed throughout the 8th annual Cattermole Timber Classic on the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) this past Monday and Tuesday, July 10th and 11th, where a field of competitive juniors played 36 holes on the well groomed Chilliwack Golf Course in Chilliwack, BC.

Cattermole Timber, a longtime member of the Chilliwack business community, has been a sponsor of Canada’s only national junior tour run by Golf Professionals since inception 8 years ago, and was pleased to be able to bring the tournament to their own backyard this season.

Kyle Dodman, 16, of Abbotsford, fired 73-70 to take low overall honours and the Boys 14-16 division title on his home course. “The very first hole of the tournament I chipped in after being in the trees the whole way up. I made birdie and was off. The key was just remembering to swing it smooth and try not to worry about what others were doing,” he said. “It is my home course and to win here is very special.” Runner-up to Dodman in the very competitive division was Blair Coan, 15, also of Abbotsford, (70-76=146), who had held the first round lead with third place finisher Shayne Yoon, 15, of Vancouver (70-77=146).

First time winner on the MJT was Alex Ludeman, 17, of Port Moody, who blistered the course with a 4-under-par 67 on day one, taking a commanding lead in the Boys 17 and up division that prevailed by one stroke for ultimate victory after 36 holes. “Making a birdie on 18 to shoot 67 was the highlight for me,” he said. “It is an honour to win my division. This is my first win on the MJT tour so I will remember it for a long time.” Ludeman shot 67-80 for a 147 total score. Brett Stewart, 17, of Abbotsford, shot 76-72, and Jessie Singh, 18, of Surrey, shot 75-73 to tie for second place behind Ludeman at 148 total score.

The Boys 13 and under and Girls division champions were once again brother-sister duo Andy and Jennifer Yang from Coquitlam. Andy Yang, 13, shot an excellent 69 on day one to close with scores of 69-76=145 and a commanding 10 stroke victory. “I guess I just practice hard,” he said. “I can feel that I’m getting better.”

Chris Lee, 13, also of Coquitlam, posted rounds of 77-78 (155) to place second in the division, while Mason Pimentel, 12, of Richmond, took third place (77-81=158).

Jennifer Yang continued to post outstanding scores for a 12-year-old golfer, with 75-71 ensuring a huge winning margin amongst the girls. “I got five birdies! My putting was key to my success,” she said. Victoria Choi, 14, of New Westminster (83-79), and Kim Soo Bin, 13, of Port Coquitlam (79-83), tied for second spot at 162 total score.

The divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Jay Kim, 13, of South Surrey, John Koo, Justin Yoon, 18, of Vancouver, and Linda Luo, 13, of Richmond. The Sundog Skills Competition divisional winners were Mason Pimentel, Matthew Hamilton, 14, of West Vancouver, Ryan Lloyd, 17, of Maple Ridge, and Jennifer Yang.

The MJT Cattermole Timber tournament was preceded by a free MJT Ford Go Golf! Junior Clinic for youngsters to learn how to golf, sponsored by Chilliwack Ford.

The MJT continues its British Columbia schedule on July 24th through 27th in the Okanagan with the MJT-Webber Naturals Series at Predator Ridge Golf Resort in Vernon and Sunset Ranch Golf Club in Kelowna. For more information or to register, please visit www.maplejt.com or call 1-877-859-4653.
