Kevin Lee Wins 2007 China Junior Golf Open

Kevin Lee, 12, of Surrey, British Columbia, won the 2007 China Junior Golf Open held last week in the Chinese province of Hainan. Lee was part of a four-player delegation from the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT), and competed against a field of 80 boys aged 11-14 years in the 54-hole event, which ran February 5th to 9th.

After being five shots behind with nine holes to play, Lee birdied three of the last four holes on BFA International Convention Center Golf Club in Boao to get into a playoff with Yun-Lok Huang of Canton Province. The outstandingly talented Lee defeated Huang on the first play-off hole to become the 2007 China Junior Open Boys 11-14 Champion.

“The MJT has taught me how to play tough in tournaments,” said Lee, who fired 74-73-71 (218). “I started on the MJT when I was 9 years old and won the Sundog Closest-to-the-Pin prize and still have it. I remember I was so excited. Before I came to the China Junior Open I didn’t know it was such a big tournament. But there were very good players and 80 in just my age group. I played with the number one-ranked 13-year-old in China. This was my first time away from home without my parents and I was very nervous, but my teammates made everything fine. Thank you to my teammates, the MJT, to my parents more than anyone, and Min Kim, my teacher at Cloverdale Indoor Golf (in B.C.).”

Lee’s teammates included John Koo, 17, of Langley, British Columbia, Evan Cowan, 14, of Coaldale, Alberta, and Kristina Gargaro, 17, of Port Moody, British Columbia. Koo and Cowan competed in the Boys 15-17 division, where Cowan shot 80-75-74 (229) to place 9th overall, while Koo overcame illness during round two to shoot 77-85-76 (238). Gargaro posted scores of 82-82-81 (245) to take 5th spot in the Girls division. The group, which was sponsored by Travel Underwriters, was chaperoned by non-playing team captain and MJT Assistant Director, Vince Liu, and Murray Poje, MJT Executive Director.

“We were in an unfamiliar place, playing on different grass, with sandy and inconsistent greens, and it was very hot and humid,” said Liu. “The Canadian contingent gave wonderful performances. Due to them we are being formally invited to compete in Shanghai and Malaysia. I hope I have the privilege of being their captain again.”

The four players qualified for the spots to China through the Boston Pizza-presented MJT, Canada’s premier and only national junior golf tour run by Golf Professionals. For more information, please visit www.maplejt.com or call 1-877-859-GOLF.
