Christina Lake Championship Golf Course
This is another BC golf course sporting a must play rating by Golf Digest. In 2002 this prestigious golf publication said Christina Lake was one the best places in North America to play golf and who am I to disagree? Christina Lake, in the west Kootenay part of BC and close to Grand Forks, Castelgar, Osoyoos and Nelson, is an 18-hole delight measuring out to 6,700 yards and every inch of it is as much a joy to look at as it is to play.
Why Christiana Lake?
First of all it starts in the pro shop and clubhouse. If you need it they have it in stock and if your taste buds want it their restaurant and bar serve it. This California style clubhouse is only a few years old and placed where it is on the course it acts as a crown to this jewel of a golf course. You catch a break on the first hole. It is a good strong par 4, 415 yards long, but the fairway is wide enough for most to hit and the green is flat, relatively speaking, as compared to some of the undulations you will see before your day is out. A good drive and a mid iron have you putting for birdie. The 2nd hole, a 360-yard uphill par 4, gives you your first look at the black sand bunkers that pot the course. Warning here, the stuff sticks like glue to your pants if it is damp out.
The Best Hole on the Course
I have to be honest; I first played Christina under tournament conditions. The wind was up and I was struggling to shoot my handicap. But wow, when I saw the par three 215 yards ninth I knew I wouldn’t be aiming anywhere close to the green. First off you’re well above the green and the hole set up gives you the feeling of playing a dogleg hole. There is a large water hazard on the left, a bunker between green and water and lots of up and down swales in the green. Even under ideal conditions aiming for anything more than the front right of this green is a gamble.
What To Do Next
What to do after your round of golf? Well how about more golf? Christina Lake golf course is also home to the prettiest par 3 course in the world. The Cascade par 3 is a 2,000 yard walk and a good stretch of both your legs and your game. On both courses the season is late May through to early October. High season can be 30 degrees and sunny, the fall brings the temperatures down to the low teens and the autumn foliage is amazing in colour.
