Golden Golf Club - A Great Start or Finish to any BC Golf Trip
Golden, BC offers up a spectacular golf course layout and a beautiful place to visit. Enjoying Golden is easy, just let the sounds and sights of Mother Nature relax you on the first tee and through out the round. Try and get up tight over a 6-iron approach shot while Whitetail Deer forge almost at your feet. Try and worry about how things at the office are going when all you can see is snow-capped mountains in every direction. Everything is “golden” when you are playing in Golden.
The Golden Golf Club is a hilly but not mountainous 6778-yard course. You will play flat 400 yard holes where all you need is a 3 wood from the tee and then on the next tee you could be playing a 378 yard par four where you will need a BIG driver just to get to the 150 yard mark. The greens, although spotty until middle May, are perfect and so green that they look as if somebody has used a crayon to colour them.
I love courses that give you a warm up hole first. Number one at Golden is 368 yards long, extremely wide and the green in huge. As long as you get the ball airborne it seems you are assured of making par at least. But that is the end of the warm up holes. Number two is a monster 480-yard par four. You tee off from a slightly elevated tee box trying to hit a narrow fairway that runs hard from right to left with a creek guarding the landing area right, in case you played it too safe. And the third hole demands a draw off of the tee setting up a short approach shot to a well-bunkered green.
The backside starts off with an uphill 398-yard par 4. The rough eats into both sides of the fairway and the trees there, and everywhere, catch any ball sprayed in any direction. The green is partially hidden if you do not get to the crest of the hill (150 yard mark) and it is bunkered. Par here is a great score. If there is a knock over hole it could be the 501-yard par 5 thirteenth hole. It is narrow, there is water on the right and eventually in front of the green and the green is small and well trapped. However the hole plays dramatically downhill. During a practise round I went driver, five iron and from the white tees it was three wood, seven wood. Score well here because what ever you gain on this hole you’ll be sure to kiss good-bye on the par 3 fourteenth. Trust me whatever club you pull on that tee shot make it one, if not two more.
Golden holds a wonderful two-day Men’s Amateur on the first weekend of June. Great food, great fun, a solid prize table and two days on the Golden Golf course, life is sweet.
The season here in early May through Thanksgiving and Golden is 4 hours from Kamloops, 8 hours from Vancouver and 6 hours from Vernon but only 3 hours from Calgary. And after you have played it will always be close to your heart.
