Hyde Mountain On Mara Lake Golf Course
When the Hyde Family decided to shut down their lumber mill and turn the property into a golf course they had a vision to create something that is as special to play, as it is to look at.
And let me tell you, although one famous BC course calls themselves British Columbia’s most scenic golf course, I personally think Hyde Mountain is by far the prettiest course around. You will play stretches of holes that are flat and wide open, then after a short cart ride you will be nestled in the trees, looking over beautiful Mara Lake hitting a tee ball that will fall four hundred feet before finding the fairway. If you are looking to test your game and experience a wilderness setting like no other in BC then come to Sicamous where they have nothing to –Hyde.
Hyde’s fourth hole is the most dramatic hole I have ever seen. On your right is Mara Lake and not much else. On your left is a series of red stakes and heavy tree covered edges. Then below you, 400 feet below you, is the fairway. It is intimidating to look so far down a hillside and see what appears to be a thin green line and think, “That’s the fairway I have to hit?” Relax! The fairway is wide enough and there is a fairway bunker out there that catches most balls head towards the lake. A camera is as important here as a driver. Make sure yours is loaded and contains fresh batteries.
Mountainside (number 12) is a beautiful par 5. Running out the tape at 577 yards you shouldn’t be thinking of getting home in two here. From the tee you look at a small right to left dogleg fairway that is skinny and hard to hit. Best to aim left, cutting off a little of the hillside, and let ‘er rip. Any quality shot will carry a long way, and when it lands, most balls will funnel down to the right side of the fairway. A fairway wood second shot, played out to the left, will avoid the water greenside allowing a short shot in to a big and inviting green.
All the par three holes here are a demanding treat to play. They range from 150 yards to 237 yards, from the tips. From the white tee, where almost everyone should be playing from, they challenge you with distances of 116 to 152 yards. Most have sand; some have water all have greens that are slick and difficult to read for the first timers.
Director of Golf, Bill Wilson tells me that come September 2007 they will be turning sod on a small housing complex and hotel. He must have read the disappointment in my eyes for he quickly followed that up with “ None of this will take away from the beauty of the course or the playability of the course.” He then goes on to tell me it is the wilderness setting that gets golfers up for the first time and the quality of the golf they find here that keeps them coming back. Their season is May through Thanksgiving and for a special treat rent a houseboat for a few days instead of a hotel. Then ask the course about the shore to tee shuttle they offer.
