Desert Golf BC Style - Inkameep Canyon Desert Golf Course

There is something almost romantic or nostalgic about playing golf in the desert. You almost expect to see Johnny Miller (the desert fox) on the tee box ripping his drives 300 yards down the fairways. Heck, thanks to the warm dry desert air you half expect to rip your own drives out there a mile.

Nk’Mip is a special piece of property. High above Oliver (the Wine Capital of Canada) you are all alone with your thoughts, your clubs and with Mother Nature as you look over 6,818 yards of ever changing elevations, greens that are almost too green to be healthy and views of the Okanagan Valley that are timeless and breathless.

Nk’Mip opens with a 362-yard par 4. It is a gentle opening to a wonderful course. The fairway is medium wide and bends to the left. Here length isn’t an issue. A tee ball of 180-200 yards (from any of the four tees) will set you up for a shot into a big and flat green. There is an environmentally friendly area on the left and you had better get used to this, as there are not too many holes on this course that don’t have such areas.

Number 3 is your first par three hole and your first real good opportunity to make a birdie. At 187 yards (from the tips) or 143 yards from the Whites, this slightly uphill par three has a large green and very light bunkering. The key to remember on this green, and on the rest of the course, is to look for the canal that runs by the course. Most putts will break towards that canal.

The number one handicap hole is the 485-yard par 5, fifth hole. Oddly enough on a course that is so rich with Nature’s wonders you have to aim at a man made object. There is a pair of power poles on the fairway. Split them with a bit of draw and you are in fine shape. But do not let the short yardage (for a par 5) fool you. This hole runs hard uphill and when you factor in the dogleg and if there is any wind at all blowing and you have a brute of a hole in front of you.

In my opinion, the par 4, eleventh hole is the prettiest hole on the course. It is a short, but not drivable, 289-yard par four. Yes, some of the big hitters could try and get it close but there is so much rough around the fairway, and sand around the green it doesn’t make much sense. Just hit a 5 wood, keep it straight, and trust your wedges to set up an easy three. Then take out your camera and snap a few shots of the valley below you.

Wess Danyluk (CPGA apprentice) talked to me when my round was done. He tells me that he sees 99% of us hackers on the range hitting half dozen wedges then pulling out our drivers and swinging for the fences. “When in effect they should be working on tempo and timing. This would help their game no matter what course they play on but at Nk’Mip where accuracy is so important working on rhythm and tempo should be your key thought before teeing it up here.”

Nk’Mip is open from April through November. The front nine (or bottom nine as most members call it) can remain open all year long. Last winter the course was closed for only two days in total.
