Kibsey Claims Spot To Arizona Matches At MJT Event
Two days of great golf were experienced during the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s (MJT) stop at St. Boniface Golf Club in Winnipeg, MB, on July 9th and 10th – there was an excellent turnout of top juniors, the weather was beautiful and the course in great shape, playing on the tough side with hard and fast greens due to the hot, dry weather.
History was made on the MJT in Manitoba as Jordan Narvey, 17, of Portage la Prairie, MB, made a hole-in-one on the 5th hole, which was playing 163 yards. This is the first hole-in-one on the MJT in Manitoba and Narvey’s first as well.
Adrian Kibsey, 15, of Winnipeg, had the low overall score, firing 70-78 (148) and qualifying for the spot on MJT Team Canada to the CAN/USA Team Matches at ASU Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Arizona, this December. Kibsey said, after noting that his eagle on the 7th hole was his tournament highlight, “This means that I know I can win when I play my best.” He took the Boys 14-16 division title by two strokes over Brock Helgeson, 15, of Balmertown, ON (76-74=150), who made it tough on Kibsey by playing steady and putting heat on the leader throughout the final round. Kibsey made some
unbelievable up and downs for par, however, and fought to the bitter end. Third place in the division was claimed by Austin Steinberger, 15, of East Selkirk, MB, who gained great ground during day two with his final round of 73 (80-73=153).
In the Boys 17 and up division, Spencer Harris, 17, of Winnipeg, made it interesting by firing five birdies and an eagle on the final day to shoot 71 and fall short of one for the overall low score and qualifying spot, but did win his division title (78-71=150). “I did not play well the first few holes of the second round and felt out of contention until I finished birdie-eagle on the front nine,” he said. “After not playing well in the Manitoba Junior, this win rebuilds some confidence for me going into the rest of the year. I would like to continue to do well in MJT tournaments and hopefully do well in the Manitoba Amateur.” Burke Nagle, 18, of Winnipeg, also made it tough on Harris, firing a 73 on day two to finish at 77-73 (150), the runner-up in Boys 17 and up. Tied for third place in the division behind Nagle at 152 total score were Vishnu Persad, 17, of Winnipeg (77-75), and Matt Loewen, 17, of Winkler, MB (72-80).
Myles Sullivan, 13, of Portage la Prairie, played great consistent golf to win the Boys 13 and under division by five strokes with scores of 79-82 (161). “The highlight for me was getting to know a couple of new people and playing with some friends,” said Sullivan. “My goal is to become more focused on the course. This win means that I should have the game to compete with the top juniors around.” Sullivan was playing against some strong competition in Winnipeggers Scott Mazur, 13 (83-83=166), and Garrett Neiles, 13 (81-86=167), who were not going to let up, but had to settle for second and third place respectively.
In the Girls division, Bethany Goran, 16, of Dauphin, MB, shot 87-81 (168) to run away with the winner’s trophy. Half way through round two, Goran was under par and was looking like a professional. “The best part for me was my second round because I cut down a lot of shots and I scored better,” she said. “Playing on the MJT helps me calm my nerves because I get used to playing in tournaments.” Bri-Ann Tokariwski, 14, of Winnipeg, was pleased to finish second (90-94=184) as this was her first MJT event. Young Jenna Roadley, 12, also of Winnipeg, took third place with scores of 102-101.
The divisional winners in the Mr. Lube Long Drive Competition were Ryley Pace, 12, of Red Lake, ON, Peter Moon, 16, of Winnipeg, Brett Kuran, 17, of Winnipeg, and Bri-Ann Tokariwski. The Sundog Skills competition divisional winners were Garrett Neiles, Jeff Bassey, 15, of Winnipeg, and Spencer Harris.
The MJT wraps its Manitoba schedule on July 23rd and 24th with the MJT-Manitoba PGA Junior Championship presented by Bieber Securities at Transcona Golf Club in Winnipeg, a qualifier for the North American Junior Championship at The badit Golf Club in New Braunfels, Texas, this December.
