Revelstoke Golf Club - Peaceful Golf

Revelstoke Golf Club is as peaceful and as enjoyable as golf can get. With the Columbia River circling the course and the snow capped mountains acting as your gallery I cannot imagine a more peaceful setting for a golf club.

The course itself is 6,537 yards long from the blue tees, 6,248 from the whites and 5,847 from the green tees and no matter which tee box you pick you are in for a treat. You will notice right away that this course is very flat and that means you can slap the bag over your shoulder and hoof it around. In a world where courses seem to almost compete with each other in how much elevation change they can build in, it is always a blessing to see a traditional country club lay out that encourages walking.

The first hole is a relatively benign 460-yard par 5. The hole swings to the right and is lined by tall mature fir and cedar trees. No great mysteries here, just keep the ball in the middle and you’ll do fine. Your first par three is the 214 yard third hole. You tee off through a tunnel of trees that line the hole almost up to the green. From there the trees drop away leaving you to hit and hold a mid-sized fast green with lots of sand. The smart play here, if you do not have the juice to get it to the green, is a tee ball landing short of the green. Here it is a simple pitch and maybe a one putt for par.

Number 5 is the number one handicap hole on the course and is home to ‘Craig’s Lake.’ This 396 yard dog leg right par four starts off with a very narrow fairway that swings through the trees and past a fairway bunker on the left before opening up a little to expose the green. Unless you know just where to look Craig’s Lake isn’t easy to spot. Really it is just a small water hazard on the right side of the fairway about 35 yards short of the green but if you don’t know it’s there I’ll guarantee you’ll hit it. For all approach shots to the green play a little left of centre. This keeps you away from the water and always looking down the middle of the green.

Number 12 is a classic ‘short’ par 4. At 334 yards from the back tees and only 314 from the whites, so some of the big hitters could possibly drive close to the front edge. The hole runs a little uphill and that will probably stop most, if not all of us, from driving to the middle of the green. It is a massive green so add a club if you see a back pin.

Revelstoke is a traditional golf club. No fancy water hazards. No artificial plants or environmentally friendly areas. A solid, enjoyable layout that puts all the trouble right in front of your face so you can see it. Short hitters can beat this course with fairway woods from most tees while gorillas will enjoy the fact that they can beat the ball as hard as they want and normally have a second shot. The season is early May until middle October and come summer time the heat is on so slather up the sunscreen. And bring a camera; Revelstoke is one of British Columbia’s prettiest little towns.
