Sun Peaks Resort Golf Course
Fifty minutes north of Kamloops, heading towards Jasper, is the fun for all seasons Sun Peaks Resort. Wintertime skiing, snowmobile and wilderness adventures and five star accommodations await all those seeking snow time fun. But more important than that is what Sun Peaks offers up during the summer. Number one on that list is the 18 hole Sun Peaks Resort Golf Course.
From the black tees Sun Peaks measures out to 6,352 yards. But don’t be fooled into playing from here. They have 3 other sets of tees and if you match your game to the right tees you cannot help but have fun here.
The first hole is a bit of an odd ball. It is 363-yard downhill narrow par four. There is water in the middle of the fairway, a small stream, and it lays at the 180-yard mark. No, you cannot easily drive over the water but you can drive into the water. Head pro Bob Duncan tells visitors to hit a 175-yard tee ball and then hit a 175 yard second shot and they’ll be fine. “They may not have a putt for birdie, but they will be putting for par at worst.”
The new back 9 opened in the summer of 2005, it starts off with a dramatic 566-yard par 5. This hole is down hill and runs hard to the left and has creeks and water hazards just waiting for you. Perhaps the hole that offers the most smiles and long ball opportunities is the 381-yard par four 16th. I can see the big hitters driving this green and I can see the smiles on the rest of our faces as we pace off what could be our longest drive of the day.
So What to Do Now?
You are in one of the world’s greatest resorts what to do next is limited only to your budget and energy level. Take the gondola up to the mountaintop and have a picnic. Go RV exploring and remember photography trips can be arranged. Wine tasting, night clubs, primo restaurants are all with in minutes of the 18th tee.
Watching the Seasons
Even though the people in Kamloops have received their first sunburn of the season Sun Peaks may still have snow on the ground. This is a very high mountain top course so keep that in mind when booking tee times and vacation dates. Middle June thru to early September are perhaps the best times to play. Any earlier or later and it could be very cool if not white under your spikes.
