2006 Telus Skins - Day 1 Events and Highlights
The crowds were out to watch the historic event of Ames, Garcia, Daly, Norman, and Nicklaus play in the first ever 5-way Skins Game at the Banff Springs Golf Course. Banff Springs as consistently been ranked in the top 10 courses for all of Canada.
Banff Alberta, the playground for the wealthy Europeans and Asia hosted about 5000+ spectators, volunteers, and corporate golfers for a 3-day venue that will be very difficult to top for a mountain setting skins venue.
TSN will broadcast the Skins Game on Aug 12th and 13th, check local listings for air times.
A recap of the first 9 holes as follows...
3479 yards, par 35
Canada's own Stephen Ames runs away with skins (6) and birdies (4) and $95K in his hip for the first day. Final round of 31.
John Daly looked ragged as he arrived in Banff at 3:00am from the Buick Open on Sunday. Even par 35 and no shut out.
Sergio Garcia was hitting the ball very deep, making a nice par at #1, a fantastic birdie at #8 and captured the remaining 3 skins and $55K.
Greg Norman and Jack Nicklaus each played par golf, nothing eventful but never the less, always a treat to be up close with the Golden Bear.
The fans not only had pleasures from witnessing some of the best players, but on-site food and beverages kept the crowd very pleased. Two-fisting martinis was one gals pleasure while keeping cool in the shade.
The crowd was also treated to an incredible showing of long driving and trick shot mastery with Calgary's own Jason Zuback playing up the crowd on Monday prior to the 1st round 9-holes. This man is "UNREAL" - the arms, the power, and the skill to drive the ball 400+ yards. Jason showed of a variety of tricks, i.e. hammer an almost 200 yard drive with a putter, lob wedges at 165 yards, and teeing up the ball as high striking the ball with the hardest baseball swing one will ever see. If you get a chance to watch this guy, do it. It was great to see him work the crowd, ask for some volunteers to trying hitting the ball a simply 100 yards with an elevated tee of 36". No one came close to moving it past 5 yards, ha!
