With Alberta celebrating its Centennial, TELUS was eager to pay tribute to the province and announced today that the TELUS Skins Game will be coming to Alberta for the first time in the event’s 14-year history.

Sergio Garcia and defending TELUS Skins Game Champion Stephen Ames will be joined by some of the biggest names in golf as the event comes to The Fairmont Banff Springs Resort and Golf Course, August 7-8, 2006.

The TELUS Skins Game comes to Alberta after a hugely successful event in 2005 that saw the legendary Jack Nicklaus, Vijay Singh, John Daly and Stephen Ames battle in front of a sold-out gallery and national television audience at Nicklaus North Golf Course in Whistler, British Columbia. Nicklaus was participating in the event just days before playing in his final competitive event, the British Open.

“The TELUS Skins Game is a highlight of the Canadian summer sporting schedule and the entire TELUS team is proud to share this event with golf fans from all corners of the country,” said Joe Natale, President of TELUS Business Solutions. “Alberta has been a great supporter of TELUS for many years and deserves an event of this calibre.”

The intimate, relaxed setting of the Skins Game format allows players to engage with the cameras and the crowds as they compete against each other for pride and prize money. This year’s event will celebrate the rich tradition of the game with a special theme paying tribute to different eras in golf’s history.

“Playing in, and actually winning, the TELUS Skins Game last year was a thrill,” said Stephen Ames. “But having the opportunity to defend this title, in front of Alberta’s golf fans who have been so supportive of my family and me over the years, will make this year’s event one of the highlights of my career. I would especially like to thank TELUS for bringing this event to the province of Alberta.”

"I have always enjoyed being a part of the TELUS Skins Game and playing in front of the Canadian fans," said Sergio Garcia, who won the 2002 TELUS Skins Game with 8 skins for $185,000. "Each year they round up some of the best players to compete against, and have fun with, on the golf course. I have heard many great things about Banff and the golf course there and I'm looking forward to seeing it in person in August."

Designed in 1928 by Canada’s world-renowned golf course architect, Stanley Thompson, The Fairmont Banff Springs Golf Course is famous for its panoramic beauty and challenging layout set in the heart of the Rocky Mountains. The course winds along the Bow River under the snow-capped peaks of Sulphur Mountain and Mount Rundle.

More world-class participants for the 2006 TELUS Skins Game will be announced in the coming months along with event ticket information.

Over the years, the Skins Game line-up has included many of the biggest names in the game, including: Nick Price, Ray Floyd, Jack Nicklaus, Fred Couples, Lee Trevino, Tom Watson, Nick Faldo, Ben Crenshaw, Greg Norman, John Daly, Ernie Els, Mark O’Meara, Mike Weir, Ian Leggatt, Phil Mickelson, David Duval, Sergio Garcia, Vijay Singh, and last year’s Champion, Stephen Ames.
