TELUS Skins Game at Nicklaus North - Front 9
Jack in Fine Form
For a 65 year old golfer announcing his retirement from competitive golf, Jack Nicklaus captured $60,000 with 4 skins and thrilled the crowd purely by his presence. The admiration shinned thru for the "Golden Bear" dispite the drizzly rain during the 1st nine holes of the TELUS Skins Game.
Golfing Great Jack Nicklaus went driver to driver with some of the biggest names and hitters on the tour today. Jack said it best after the 1st nine holes while in the media tent, “My distance today is about the same as it has been – around 285 – but these guys are long, like so many of the players using the best in technology, from balls to clubs”. He also commented that he first called the USGA in 1977 about the changes to the golf ball allowing it to travel farther and farther.
Hole 4 and 4 skins ($60,000)
Jack's approach with his 5 iron from 185+ yards left him an 11-foot putt to take the 4-hole $60,000 skin.
Grip and Rip John!
Daly secured skin #2 and $15,000 on the par 4 - 5th hole measuring 416 yards. John's drive was huge with 70 yards left to the green.
Stephen Ames off 1st Tee
Canada’s own Stephen Ames claimed the 7th hole and 2 skins for a cool $35,000 with a solo 2-foot birdie putt. Seemed big boys John and VJ were just foot wedges away and still managed to find the well guarded front right greenside bunker.
VJ Singh skinless for 9 holes.
John, regardless of how he plays at these made for TV events, enjoys the connection with the kids and adults. People love John Daly. Perhaps it is John's life documented in print and TV and the troubles he has faced, he is real not "surreal". My day was made too, gave John a hand-shake and a photo oop with Mr. Nicklaus.
Daly was popular with the kids and autographs
REAL long ball hitter Jason Zuback displayed his unique and jaw dropping talents on hole #3, the very long 518 yard par 5. Jason chuckled as he pointed out the TSN camera guy on the scaffolding, we all expected to hear a faint, "uggh" some 375 yards out.
Jason Zuback driving a mere 350 yds to warm up
Vijay Singh although scoreless on day one will have his chance to tie Nicklaus for the lead early Tuesday when they tee off at the tenth hole. Holes eight and nine along with ten will be worth $60,000.
Kidsport Canada is the real winner today as the fab four raised $23,249 for the charity as a result of the “Charity on the Course” program. TELUS donated $2,000 for every birdie and $3,000 for every eagle scored by the four pro golfers during the event which resulted in 11 birdies.
